The Big Easy

The Crescent City, so named because it was built on the banks of an oxbow of the Mighty Mississippi, has facinated the world under four flags.

A unique cultural melting pot of Native American, African American, French, Spanish and American influences has created the unique cajun, creole magical mix of red beans, Mardi Gras and jazz.

Floods, hurricanes, wars, disease have bruised her and yet it endures, its fabric woven into our culture and the imagination of the world.

Here is some of her best, and worst, as she carries on and rebuilds.

Palm Beach Equestrian Center

Host to the annual Winter Equestrian Festival, a season long event showcasing the world's finest equestrian athletes, both the four and two legged variety. Frequented by Olympic champions and part of the US Olympic trials.

My girls rode here almost twenty years ago when it was no more than a ring or two. Now a virtual city, it has defined Wellington, anchored it's meteoric rise, and established Palm Beach County as the home of one of the world's premier equestrian fascilities.

It is amazing to watch these world class athletes weighing in excess of 1,800 pounds perform with only a subtle nudge, a tug on a rein, the pressure of the riders thigh and a few words of encouragement.
